The kick off for Fox Sports 1 will include 6 hours of UFC action which is topped off by Fox Sports 1 1 main event, at Light Heavyweight of Maruicio “Shogun” Rua (21-7) vs. Chael Sonnen (27-13-1).
Former UFC Light Heavyweight champion, Brazilian Maruicio Rua last competed at UFC on Fox 5 losing a unanimous decision to Alexander Gustafsson. Rua was expected to face Antonio Nogueira at UFC 161, until Nogueira was forced to pull due to injury.
Chael Sonnen did volunteer to replace Nogueira at UFC 161 but due to visa issues with UFC 161 taking place in Canada was not possible. Sonnen is coming off of back to back TKO losses to Anderson Silva and Jon Jones.
A Bantamweight battle pitting “The California Kid” Urijah Faber (28-6) against Yuri Alcantara (28-4) so been added to the August 17 show. Faber the founder of Team Alpha Male has back to back submission wins over Ivan Menjivar and Scott Jorgensen. Alcantara is coming off a UFC on FX 8 win over Iliarde Santos. Alcantara is 4-1-0, 1nc in 6 UFC bouts.
Lightweight TUF alums will meet when season 13’s Ramsey Nijem (7-3) takes on season 15’s James Vick (4-0). Nijem will be looking to bounce back coming off a KO loss to Myles Jury, that ended a 3 fight win streak. For the undefeated Vick this will be his UFC debut after not being medically cleared to compete at the TUF 15 finale.
A Light Heavyweight bout is also in place that will see Grudge Training Center’s Cody “Donnybrook” Donovan (8-20) clash with Ovince St. Preux, who is a member of Knoxville MMA. Donovan is on a 4 fight winning streak, which includes a UFC on FX 6 promotional debut KO win over Nick Penner. “OSP” has rebounded from a decision loss to Gegard Mousasi with wins over TJ Cook at Strikeforce Rousey vs. Kaufman and having defeat Gian Villante at UFC 159.
UFC on Fox Sports 1 1 takes place at the TD Garden Arena in Boston, Massachusetts.
