Bellator MMA has announced that they have waived there matching rights to contract offers for now former promotional Welterweight champion “Funky” Ben Askren (12-0); effectively releasing the fighter.
Askren who is a former Olympic wrestler who only wrestles in MMA, making him the most one-dimensional fighter in MMA, but is dominate in that dimension. As Bellator Welterweight champion Askren successfully defended his title against Jay Hieron (SD), Douglas Lima (UD), Karl Amoussou (TKO), and Andrey Koreshkov (TKO). In total Askren went a perfect 9-0 in Bellator.
The next Bellator Welterweight champion bout will see the winner of the season 9 tournament finals of Rick Hawn and Ron Keslar vs. season 8 tournament winner Douglas Lima.
