Today Friday December 13, UFC president Dana White and UFC Welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre (25-2) held a joint conference call. What was said during that call, has changed the landscape of the UFC.

During that call champion “GSP” announced that he is taking an indefinite leave from MMA and is vacating the UFC Welterweight title. Dana White then announced that Johny Hendricks (15-2) will meet Robbie Lawler (22-9) as the new main event of UFC 171 in Dallas, Texas; with the winner becoming the new UFC Welterweight title holder. Originally UFC 171 was announced to be headlined by Glover Teixeira challenging Jon Jones for the UFC Light Heavyweight title. The Jones- Teixeira bout has been moved to UFC 172, that doesn’t have a venue or date yet.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown and St. Pierre has been the Welterweight since April of 2008. This is the 2nd title reign for St. Pierre, who also has won 12 consecutive bouts; including 9 successful title defenses.
