Bellator 131 Topped by Ortiz vs. Bonnar & Chandler vs. Brooks
Bellator 131, on November 15th will be the final event of season 11 and Bellator MMA has announced that event will be topped by a Light Heavyweight grudge match and a Lightweight title bout rematch.
UFC Hall of Famer’s “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz (17-11) and Stephan “The American Psycho” Bonnar (15-8) will go toe to toe in a 3-round main event live an free on Spike TV. The bout was announced during Bellator 123.
The Bellator 131 co-main event will be a 5-round Lightweight title rematch from Bellator 120, as former 155 lbs. champion Michael Chandler (12-2) challenges, making his first title defense Will “Ill Will” Brooks (14-1).
Ortiz 1-7-1 in his last 9, is 1-0 in Bellator after coming out of retirement to join the promotion. Ortiz is coming off submitting Bellator Middleweight Alexander Shelmenko in a Light Heavyweight bout at Bellator 120; a win that ended a 3 fight skid. Bonnar will be fighting for the first time since a October 2012 on short notice, TKO loss to Anderson Silva, in a special 205 lbs. main event that save the UFC 153 card from being canceled. Bonnar lost the fight, having a 3 fight win streak ended and also tested positive for banned substances after the fight; and announced his retirement from MMA.
When Eddie Alvarez was injured and forced to withdraw from his Bellator Lightweight title defense at Bellator 120 against Michael Chandler, it was season 9 tournament winner Will Brooks who was given the chance to face for Chandler the interim championship. Brooks extended his current win streak to 5 defeating Chandler by split decision. With Eddie Alvarez now on the UFC roster, Will Brooks is the Bellator Lightweight champion. Besides the loss to Brooks, Chandler’s other loss is also by split decision to Eddie Alvarez at Bellator 106, when chandler lost the Lightweight tile.
