Jackson’s MMA Series XIV: Urso vs Montoya, Results

Its a cool Saturday night outside and were are just outside Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the jammed packed Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino, which is playing host to tonight’s Jackson’s MMA Series XIV. The event is sure to be an emotional and intense one with  main event featuring UFC prospect Nick Urso taking on Santa Fe ‘s own Joshua ” The Destroya” Montoya. Montoya a 20 fight MMA vet has already announced this will be his last fight. Dose Urso take another step towards the UFC or did Montoya get a story booked ending to his career?

Jesse Tafoya vs Charles Parrack

Overview-

Parrack throws a right off the glove touch., very non-sportsman like. Parrack is throwing hard right hands. Tafoya finds the opening lands some solid lefts. Parrack scores a take down. Tafoya retains guard, goes for the armbar and gets the tap.

Brandon Jones vs Charles Deleon

Overview-

A three war that never hit the ground.  Both men tested each others chins with big left hooks. Jones the more creative striker would land several solid punches from strange angles including a very nice step in left upper cut. In the clinch knees would be exchanged but no tide turning strikes. Jones would consistently put money in the bank with hard right low kicks that would leave their mark and a large bruise.

Winner Brandon Jones by (30-27, 30-27, 30-27 ) unanimous decision

 

Saalim Nance vs Jose Cueto

Overview-

Three hard fought rounds Nance went 8-12 unofficially in take downs. Nance put Cueto against the fence many times. Nance was never able to gain any real control on the ground as Cueto kept getting back to his feet. Cueto had his biggest success in the 2nd with mixing his kicks and punches backing Nance to the cage and causing swelling around Nance left eye. Twice Cueto would score take downs and would rapid fire punches and elbows from on top.

Winner Jose Cueto by announced as a split decision (no score cards read), Commission informed me that the fight was actually a  majority decision (29-28,29-28, 29-29)

 

Darrell Macklin vs Tyler Cattey

Overview-

Macklin with hard leg kicks caused an apparent injury to Cattey’s left leg. In the clinch Macklin would keep bussy with knees. Cattey would 3 times score take downs but would spend the time  fighting off submissions instead of producing offense. Including in the 3rd round when after a long minute Cattey would tapout to an armbar.

Ray Martinez vs Adrian Yazzie

Overview-

Yazzie fired off several kicks. Martinez caught a body kick for the take down.  Martinez moved right to north-south and locked upnthe north-south choke for a quick tap.

Randee Morales vs Cynthia Arceo

Overview-

Arceo with a kick heavy offense kept Morales off balance in the first. Morales ate a teap kick to the face. Arceo followed with letfs, threw a high kick that got blocked. Arceo kept on Moarles firing big lefts in the clinch, the dirty boxing would pay off and the ref would jump in stopping the fight.

Jon Sparks vs Yomi Heredia

Overview-

Sparks landed two big solid head kicks in the first round that broke up Heredia’s nose. The second of the two saw Heredia turn and fall curling up. The ref went to step in but stpped as sparks jumped on Heredia back landing punches and unsuccessfully tiring for a choke. In the 2nd Heredia was relentless on the take downs and after a scramble about that saw Spaks fail to get distance to get back to his feet. Sparks was forced up against the cage, Heredia goes for a kimura rolling to his back and forcing the tap

Nick Urso vs Joshua Montoya

Overview-

Urso controlled most of the 1st round with leg kicks beating up Montoya’s front, left leg. Montoya scored a take down late in the first. Urso got back to his feet and Montoya jumped on a guillotine choke that didn’t get the finish. Urso is the 2nd started to put his combinations together. Montoya landed a nice teap to the face. A follow up kick to the body from Montoya would be caught and Urso would spend the majority of the 2nd on top. Urso landed a big elbow that cut Montoya open under the left eye. Montoya would fight back to his feet just before the round ended and attempted a guillotine choke. Urso in the 3rd stalked Montoya and score a take down in the center of the cage. Montoya on his back, throws up and locks in a pair of triangle chokes, that Urso escapes. Urso stands and is kicking Montoya’ s leg. Fight ends with Montoya shooting a double leg take down.

Winner Nick Urso by ( 30-27, 30-27,  29-28 ) unanimous decision
