The 1st title defense for Bellator Middleweight champion Brandon Halsey (8-0) will come on May 15th at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California; against Hawaiian Kendall Grove (21-14-0, 1 nc).

Halsey earned his shot at Bellator gold by defeating Hector Ramirez (TKO), Joe Pacheso (UD), and Brett Cooper (SUB). Halsey made the most of his shot, putting Alexander Shlemenko to sleep in 35 seconds, with a rear naked choke, in September of 2014.

Grove has won 3 of his last 4 fights and is 2-1 in Bellator. Grove debuted with the promotion defeating Joe Vedepo by unanimous decision at Bellator 104. At Bellator 127, Grove submitted Chritian M’Pumbu, rebounding from a knock out loss to Brett Cooper, at Bellator 114.

Grove getting this title shot comes as somewhat of a surprise seeing as how Grove’s last loss came at the hands of Brett Cooper, who was dismantled by current champion Brandon Halsey. And nothing earns a title shot like being 3-4 in your last 7 fights. It’s also is worth mentioning that Tamdan McCory is 2-0 in Bellator with a pair of 1st round finishes.

At least when Bellator had tournaments I could understand why guys were getting title shots, instead of Scott Croker seemingly just drawing names from a hat.
