The first title defense for Daniel Straus’s (24-6) 2nd title run will come against the man he took the belt from Patricio “Pitbull” Freire (25-4).

At Bellator 106 Straus capped of a 6 fight win streak, winning the Bellator title for the first time, with a unanimous decision win over Pat Curran. Curran would take the belt back submitting Straus at Bellator 122. Following a 1st round TKO of Justin Wilcox at Bellator 127, Straus would challenge Freire for the title, but would get submitted in the 4th round. After submitting Henry Corrales at Bellator 138, Straus would take advantage of a 3rd shot at “Pitbull” and reclaiming the title with a unanimous decision win at Bellator 145. Following a 7 fight win streak, Freire has lost 2 of his last 3, the decision to Straus, and a TKO from injury loss to Benson Henderson, with the bright spot being submitting Henry Corrales at Bellator 153.

Straus is a southpaw, who’s striking has grown greatly over the last few years. Early on Straus was known as a grinder but has found the finish on 3 of his last 5 wins. Freire stands orthodox and is a BJJ black belt, who during his Bellator career has been more then happy to stand and trade.

Bellator 178 is set for April 21 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
