Rumble in the Rio Recap & Results

live at the Kiva Auditorium inside the Albuquerque Convention Center for a night of living Boxing as Victory Boxing presents Rumble in the Rio. Getting the Night stated is a 6-fight amateur card featuring Police vs. Firefighters. The 5 fight main card features 4 undefeated fighters and 3 of New Mexico’s top prospects.

Recap:

The first amateur fight saw Brian Salazar of the Santa Fe Detention Center take a unanimous decision from George Valdez of the Bernalillo County Fire. The 2nd fight saw Tylor Caulder of the Bosque Farms Police take a razor thin split decision from Dr. Daniel Barkhoff of Presbyterian Hospital. Fight 3 saw Amberto Padilla of Las Vegas Fire defeating Qusta Police’s Jacob Martinez. Fight 4 has Los Alamos Fire’s Kenny Martinez knock down Albuquerque Police’s Thomas Zalesk 3 times in 2 rounds to earn the Technical knockout victory. The final amateur fight saw Los Alamos Police’s Jason Waldo take a unanimous decision, that included 2 knock downs, from Santa Fe County Fires Manny Gallegos. Giving the Police a 3-2 team victory.

After a intermission the pro card starts off with Christan Camarena (1-0) of Pasadena, California vs. Rene Cedillo (0-0) of El Paso, Texas. Rd 1 saw Cedillo as the more active, with Camarena catching on to the Cedillo timing at the end of the rd. Camarena found his grove  in the  2nd landing his lead left, then landing the power right in the later part of the rd.Camarena in the 3rd was aggressive but scored with his counter punching. Camarena Left knock down in the 4th. Cedillo with a bloody nose in the 4th and Camarena is coming forward throwing heat. Cedillo evades and makes it to the final bell. Christian Camarena takes the unanimous decision.

Fight 2 Pano Tiatia (1-0) St. George, Utah vs. Corey Barlow (2-1) of Austin, Texas. Pano was the more effective fighter in the 1st throwing combinations and blasting tothe body with hooks. Pano continues to work the body. Barlow lacking in activity. Into the 3rd we’re getting one big jumping in hook at a time. In the 4th Pano started to find a home for his hardedbpunches and continues to put work Barlow. Pano takes the unanimous decision.

Fight 3 Alex Holguin (10-1) of Albuquerque, NM vs. Jeremy Longoria (9-7) of Corpus Christie, TX. A slow hesitant first that saw Holguin with his jab land the large amount of scoring blows. In the 2nd Holguin continues to work off his jab, landed a hard uppercut with Longiria on the ropes, but also ate shook that had the New Mexican blinking for a moment. A big 4th for Longiria saw him score a knock down off a flurry of punches which started with a hard counter left. Holguin came back strong in 5th working off his jab and pressuring Longoria. we go to the judges and Holguin takes the unanimous decision.

Co-main event is up next with Brian Mendoza (14-0) of Albuquerque, NM vs. Tyler Pogline (16-13-1) of Colorado Springs, CO. Mendoza comes out ripping hard to the body scored a knock down in the closing seconds of the 1st. Still ripping to the body Mendoza get the 2nd knock down of the fight early in the 2nd with a right uppercut and end the night a minute later with a overhand right.

Main Event Matthew Griego (6-0) Of Albuquerque, NM vs. David Martino (2-1) of San Felipe, Mex.  The first two Rds of the fight were at a blistering pace with both fighters scoring. Three times in the third Griego landed hard with his counter knocking Martini back a step. Body and head Griego nicely mixing up his targets. When moving forward Griego is working his jab. Martino can land his jab but can’t find a home for a power shot. In the 6th Griego mixes up being offensive and allusive having in part of the rd and the other part circling off the ropes using defense. We go to the judges, who score the unanimous decision in favor of Matthew Griego.
