Woodley to Defend Welterweight strap vs. Maia at UFC 214

UFC 214 was already shaping up to be a big card, but with the announcement of a third title fight being added to the mix, the event is of epic expectations.

As he revealed on UFC tonight, Tyron Woodley (17-3) will defend the UFC Welterweight championship against Demian Maia (25-6).

Following consecutive wins over Hong Hyun Kin and Kelvin Gastleum, Woodley would take the UFC welterweight title from Robbie Lawler at UFC 202. Woodley has since fought Stephen Thompson twice. The first would be scored a draw and would also go the distance ending in a Woodley unanimous decision.

Maia is one of the last true specialist in MMA, a 3rd degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner. Maia earned his title shot with a 7 fight win streak, that includes submissions of Neil Manny, Matt Brown, and Carlos Condit. Hopefully in this his second title opportunity, Maia will have learned from the mistakes made against Anderson Silva in 2010.

UFC 214 is July 29 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
