GSP Vacates, Whittaker & Rockhold Battle for Belt at UFC 221

The UFC’s Middleweight Title picture has taken a expected, rumored, and some what disappointing turn, that ends with a positive twist.

Not many people really expected for GSP to defend the UFC Middleweight Title. Earlier this week it was announced that GSP would be sidelined indefinitely. St. Pierrehas now officially relinquished the UFC 185 lbs. title he took from Michael Bisping.

Interim champion Robert “The Reaper” Whittaker aka “Bobby Knuckles” has been elevated to full Middleweight champion and will be making his first title defense February 11th, at the Perth Arena in Perth, Australia, against former champion Luke Rockhold.

Whittaker 26, 19-4, is on a 8 fight win streak, 4 victories by knock out, coming off defeating Yoel Romero, by unanimous decision at UFC 213, to win the interim title.

Rockhold 33, 16-3, is coming off forcing David Branch to tap from punches in the main event of UFC Fight Night 116, this past September. The victory saw Rockhold get back in the win column, 14 months after losing the UFC Middleweight Title to Michael Bisping.
