The UFC’s June trip to the Windy City, has a 185 lbs Championship rematch, slotted in as main event.
The UFC Middleweight Title has been on quit the journey in the last two years. In June of 2016, at UFC 199, Luke Rockhold was dethroned in his first title defense by Michael Bisping. Bisping successfully defended the belt at UFC 204 against Dan Henderson. 7 months later, with Bisping sidelined, at UFC 213, Robert Whittaker would become interim Middleweight Champion with a unanimous decision victory over Yoel Romero. Whittaker would come away with the belt and a knee injury. Leading to Michael Bisping defending the UFC Middleweight title against former Welterweight Champion George’s St. Pierre. St. Pierre would win by rear naked choke at UFC 217. St. Pierre would soon after vacate the title. The UFC would then set Robert Whittaker to defend against former champion Luke Rockhold, but a staph infection would sideline Whittaker. The UFC needing a title fight to keep UFC 218 as a pay per view, lead to Luke Rockhold vs Yoel Romero a interim Middleweight Title. Romero who took the fight on 4 weeks notice, missed weight, but defeated Rockhold by 3rd round knockout. Romero has won 9 of 10 in the octagon, while Whittaker is 10-2, with a 8 fight win streak.
UFC 225 will also see former champion “Suga” Rashad Evans return to Light Heavyweight against Anthony “LionHart” Smith. Evans lost 4 of 6, then dropped to 185 lbs., where he lost 2 straight. Smith USB’s coming off a TKO loss to Thiago Santos, ending a 3 fight win streak.
It’s also rumored that the June 9, event at the United Center, in Chicago, Illinois, could see the sophomore trip into the octagon for Phil “CM Punk” Brooks.
