Cold War 5 results

Holmes Boxing  opened open 2019 with their 20th consecutive sellout at Buffalo Thunder. Cold War 5 a 6-bout Boxing card headlined by Albuquerque’s Fidel “The Atrisco Kid” Maldonado Jr. vs.  Mexico’s,  Luis Gerardo Avila, results below.

In the opening bout of the night, we have a rematch, Jordanne Garcia (2-0-1) vs Karina Mendoza (0-1-1). For  most of the 4 round bout, Garcia started the interactions, jabbing her way in and opening up the opportunity to land three sometimes four punch combinations. Except for the third round where Mendoza did open the round a little more accuracy,  but not enough to win the bout. Garcia finds venges in the rematch, winning by unanimous decision.

In the second fight of the night, we have a middleweight bout with Andre Galarza (1-0) vs Loreto Olivas (2-0). The action starts with Olivas throwing wild looping shots, surprisingly landing as Galarza comes forward not busy but  when throwing accurate. Going into the second round, Olivas started coming in with  unnecessary head movement with really no action just tussling around the ring. Entering the third round, Olivas comes in swinging landing right on target, surprising Galarza enough to distract his defense and lands an overhand right to Galarza’s temple, throwing his balance off and sending him to the canvas. Galarza, surprisingly, finished the round looking a little bit dazed walking back to the corner. In the last round both fighters seem exhausted, finishing the action landing glove and arm punches. Olivas came out victorious by unanimous decision.

The third fight featured light heavy weights Maurice Jackson (1-0) vs Gabriel Rodriguez (4-3). From the opening to the end of the bout, we have Jackson applying immense pressure with Rodriguez getting on his bike, trying to detour away from the onslaught power punches. The fight doesn’t last too long and in the second round Jackson puts Rodriguez down with a thunderous overhand right, causing the ref to stop it, with Rodriguez looking to un-composed to continue the action. Shortly after his KO victory while talking to Mike Adams in the middle of the ring, Jackson calls out the “Irish “Brian McClain.

Continuing on to our women’s super-fly weight bout of the night, we have Leanna Martinez (3-0) vs Amy Salinas (pro debut). In the first round Martinez opened the round with combinations landing but Salinas with the obvious weight advantage keeps Martinez on her bike, landing the effective punches. On round two, Martinez out of the gate with a combination of punches landing but only shortly due to the pressure applied by Salinas. The third round, was a battle of the headhunter and the body snatcher; watching Martinez tiring out due to the overwhelming body punches landing, we saw Salinas giving a new meaning to pate, with the most liver shots I’ve ever seen landing in a fight. Fifth and sixth was set at the same pace, including the last and final round with no shaking hands just straight to the pugilism, ending the bout in warrior fashion, giving Salinas a win in her first fight by unanimous decision.

In our co-main event of the night we had a super lightweight encounter, Antonio “Tone” Martinez (9-5-4) vs Pablo Batres (9-16). Entering the fight, Martinez comes out jabbing well, out boxing Batres. A clash of heads interrupts the round a couple of times with not blood nor cuts. In the second round Martinez comes out working head and body combinations being more effective. From round 4 to round 6 both fighters continued the toe to toe battle staying somehow in the center of the ring, “Tone” being the bigger lander and connecting at a higher rate, giving Martinez the win by unanimous decision.

In our Main of event of the evening, we had a lightweight fight starring Fidel “Atrisco Kid” Maldonado (24-4-1) vs Luis Gerardo Avila (8-14-3). For the entire bout we get showcased a boxing lesson by the “Atrisco Kid” by never risking the chance of being caught, precision punches with his angles and continuously firing his jab to either get in range or get out of range, not the normal Maldonado we are used to seeing, but for the hardcore boxing fans, very interesting to watch. The fight is not really in the crowd favorite, beginning in the fifth round until the winner of the bout is announced, due to the inactivity from both fighters. Both fighters never brawled, the “Atrisco Kid” just precisely picked his shots and won every round giving the bout to Fidel Maldonado by unanimous decision.
