Trio of Big Contests announced for Bellator 221

 Bellator MMA has announced a champion versus champion match-up and a Welterweight Grand Prix Semifinal for Bellator 221.

Bellator 221 is Saturday, May 11, at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois.

Moving up from featherweight Patricio “Pitbull” Freire will challenge “Iron” Michael Chandler for the Bellator lightweight title. Since regaining the Bellator Featherweight title from Daniel Straus, “Pitbull” has successfully defend against Daniel Weichel & Emmanuel Sanchez. Chandler ran his current win streak to three and became a three time Bellator Lightweight Champion with a December, decision win over Brent Primus. Bellator has also recently announced multi-fight contract extensions for Patrico & his brother Bellator Lightweight Patricky.

In the first Bellator welterweight Grand Prix semifinal Michael “Venus” Page faces former champion Douglas lima. Lima settles his trilogy with Andre Koreshkov in the quarterfinals , while Page bettered rival Paul Daley, both won by decision.

At Featherweight unbeaten prospect AJ McKcee will face his biggest test when he squares off with former champion Pat Curran. McKee picked up win number thirteen at Bellator 212, submitting Daniel Crawford. Curran has won three in a row, but hasn’t fought since a November 2017, decision win over John Macapa.

Additionally former WWE performer Jake Hager will step into the Bellator cage for his second professional fight, this time against TJ Jones.
