Pitbull vs The Spaniard & Machida vs. Mousasi II set for Bellator 228
Bellator MMA is returning to the Forum in Inglewood, California, in September. The first two fights announced are a Featherweight title bout & Middleweight rematch.
The headliner of the September 28th event is former simultaneous multiple division King of the Cage champion Juan “The Spaniard” Archuleta challenging simultaneous multiple division champion Particky “Pitbull” Freire (29-4) for his 145 lbs. Bellator World Championship. The bout is also a Featherweight Grand Prix Quarterfinal. Archuelta(23-1) is 5-0 inside the Bellator cage coming off his debut at Featherweight, a highlight reel knockout of former Bellator Bantamweight champion Eduardo Dantas. Freire is on a 4-fight win streak coming off winning his Lightweight by dethroning Michael Chandler at Bellator 221. TheLFA 72 takes place July 26th at the Comerica Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona.
The co-main event for Bellator 228 will see Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida up against Gegard Mousasi a rematch from 2014, that saw Machida win by unanimous decision. The former UFC Light Heavyweight champion is on a 4-fight win streak. At Bellator 222 “The Dragon” scored his 11th career knockout win stopping Chael Sonnen in the second round. Mousasi is a former DREAM, Strikeforce, & Bellator champion who looks to rebound from losing his belt and having his 8-fight win streak ended by a majority decision loss to Rafael Lovato Jr.
