Results from the early morning weigh-ins, at the UFC host hotel in Tampa, FL, for UFC Fight Night 161; “Jedrzejczyk vs. Waterson”
The 14-fight card, streaming entirely on ESPN+, is headlined by a Strawweight contest between former UFC champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk & former Invicta FC champion “The Karate Hottie” Michelle Waterson. While not officially announced by the promotion, this bout, according to both competitors, is to see who’ll be the first to challenge newly crowned Strawweight champion Weili Zhang.
Jedrzejczyk, who had 5 successful title defenses as UFC Strawweight champion during her reign, returns to the division she once ruled after a failed attempt to win the UFC Women’s Flyweight title. A Polish striker who overwhelms most of her opponents with a high volume attack, today is a huge day for the former champion as many have questioned if she’ll be able to make the Strawweight limit of 116 lbs.. Waterson, a former champion in Invicta at Atomweight (105 lbs.), has recently found her stride in the UFC; winning her last 3 fights. Not just a nickname, Waterson is a Karate based striker who has incredibly creative submissions, and has recently showed major growth in her wrestling.
Others to watch at the weigh-ins include Mackenzie Dern, who has had issues with the scale, and is returning to action after giving birth to her first child. Mike Davis is coming in on less then two-weeks notice to face Thomas Gifford. Lastly James Vick should come in looking different as he moves up from Lightweight to Welterweight.
Amalie Arena will be the host venue and the first fight is scheduled for 5 pm ET. Unlike most UFC event UFC Fight Night 161 will not have a ceremonial weigh-in.
