UFC 249 looks to be Florida bound with a pair of title bouts

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has officially announced UFC 249 is now set for May 9th.

The event was first scheduled for April 18th at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, New York. Due to the Covid-10 pandemic the location was changed to an undisclosed one, that was later proven to be Tachi Palace Resort & Casino in Northern California. It been reported that the governor of California called top executives at Disney & ESPN to halt the UFC’s plans. The new plan is for is for May 9th at an undisclosed location that is being rumored to be in Florida.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently declared the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) an essential business. The ruling has given a loophole to combat sports promotions to hold event in “the sunshine state”.  Orlando, Tampa Bay, & Jacksonville are potential landing spots, Jacksonville is currently being called the front runner.

The first main event was first set to see the long-awaited match-up of Tony Ferguson challenging undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight title. With Nurmagomedov stuck in Russia, “The Eagle” has been replaced by former WSOF champion Justin Gaethje who’ll battle Tony Ferguson for an interim title, which Ferguson has already won once.

The first proposed card for May 9th had three championship contests. That’s down to two after Amanda Nunes announced she wouldn’t be facing Felicia Spencer and preferred a full training camp. The official line up and broadcasting details have yet to be announced.

  • Welterweight Bout: Vicente Luque (17-7-1) vs. Niko Price (17-7-1)
  • Featherweight Bout: Kalvin Kattar (20-4) vs. Jeremy Stephens (28-17)
  • Heavyweight Bout: Francis N’gannou (14-3) vs. Jairzinho Rozenstruik (10-0)
  • Middleweight Bout: Ronaldo Souza (26-8) vs. Uriah Hall (15-9)
  • Women’s Strawweight Bout: Carla Esparza (15-6) vs. Michelle Waterson (17-7)
  • Heavyweight Bout: Fabricio Werdum (23-8-1) vs. Alexy Oleinik (58-13-1)
  • Featherweight Bout: Bryce Mitchell (12-0) vs. Charles Rosa (12-3)
