UFC Fight Night “Overeem vs. Sakai” Results, Overeem finishes Sakai on the ground in the 5th

The UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada is host to UFC Fight Night “Overeem vs. Sakai”.

After yesterday’s weigh-ins the card was scheduled to have nine-fights. Marcos Rogerio de Lima & Thiago Moises have tested positive for Covid-19, cancelling their fights against  Alexander Romanov & Jalin Turner. Kevin Natividad has withdrawn from facing Brian Kelleher who is now taking on Ray Rodriguez.

The event will proceed with no prelims and a seven fight main card starting at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

The main event is a top ten heavyweight encounter as number six ranked Alustair Overeem battles number nine raked Augusto Sakai. Overeem has won three of his last four fights. Sakai is 4-0 in the UFC and on a six-fight win streak.

On the strength of an early knockdown and five take-downs Hunter Azure rebounded from his first career loss with a unanimous decision win over Cole Smith.  A Sharpe right hand and shopping leg kicks saw Viviane Araujo defeat Montana De La Rosa by decision. Short notice replacement, Ray Rodriguez came out shot a take-down into a Brian Kelleher guillotine choke forcing the quick tap. Bartosz Fabinski took Andre Muniz to the ground. Fabinski escaped a guillotine choke but couldn’t defend the armbar, Giving Muniz his sixth consecutive victory. Jumping of the cage kicks, spinning kicks, and Superman punches. Michel Pereira threw everything at Zelim Imadaev, doing the majority of his damage with jabs and overhand rights. Late in the third Pereira belly to back suplex’s Imadaev takes the Imadaev’s back finishing the fight with a rear naked choke. The co-main event ends in spectacular fashion as Ovince St. Preux hits Alonzo Menifield with a fading back counter left hook, sending Menifield down to the mat face first in the second round. Big flurries from Augusto Sakai push Alistair Overeem back early. Sakai cut Overeem open with elbows from the clinch. The veteran with stood the damage getting the fight to the ground in the third, fourth, and finally finding the finish in the fifth round from strikes.

  • Women’s Flywieght Bout: Viviane Araujo (9-2) def. Montana De La Rosa (11-6) by (29-28, 30-27 x2) unanimous decision 
  • Bantamweight Bout: Hunter Azure (9-1) def. Cole Smith (7-2) by (29-28 x3) unanimous decision
