UFC announces Interim Heavyweight Title Bout for UFC 265
In a surprising move the UFC will have an interim heavyweight title fight as the main even when the promotion returns to Houston in August.
The headliner of UFC 265 will see Houston’s own Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis against unbeaten Ciryl Gane.
We sit three months removed from the coronation of “The Predator” Francis N’gannou after his second-round knockout, dethroning Stipe Miocic from atop the UFC heavyweight throne. The action by the UFC to have an interim title fight so soon after N’gannou won the title has raised eyebrows. Leading to UFC president Dana White & Marquel Martain, a member of N’gannou’s representation from CAA, exchanging on social media about how negotiations had transpired in attempt to book N’gannou’s first defense.
Derrick Lewis comes into to his second UFC heavyweight title opportunity on a four-fight win streak. “The Black Beast” has won his last two fights over Aleksei Oleinik & Curtis Blaydes by second round knockout. Ciryl Gane has been very balance in his approach to MMA since transitioning over from Muay Thai. The Frenchman has a third of his wins by knockout, a third by submission, & a third by decision. Gane has went 25 minutes in ach of his last two fights winning main event decisions over Jairzinho Rozenstruik & Alexander Volkov.
