UFC Lightweight Champion to be Crowned at UFC 280

It was long known that the UFC would be returning to Abu Dhabi in October. During UFC on ABC 3 the promotion officially announced the champion main event for UFC 280.

The vacant UFC Lightweight championship will be on the line as former champion number one contender Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira battles number four ranked Islam Makhachev.

Oliveira didn’t lose the UFC 155 lb. championship in competition, but instead relinquished the belt on the scale prior to UFC 274 after failing to make weight. The first time this situation had happen in UFC. A dubious distinction that did nothing to deter the Brazil’s will. Oliveira would respond from the adversity by submitting Justin Gathje in the first round. In all “So Bronx” is on an 11-fight win streak.

Makhachev is a protégé of UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov, who many expected to have a title around his as soon as Nurmagomedov announced his retirement. The Dagestan fighter is on a ten-fight win streak. A relentless wrestler like his head coach Makhachev is also proficient in submissions forcing Drew Dober, Thiago Moisses, and Dan Hooker to all tap. In his last outing in February the 30-year-old steam rolled through Bobby Green for a first round TKO win securing his title shot.
