Moicano vs. Korean Zombie Preview

This weekend the UFC is in Greenville, South Carolina for UFC Fight Night 154. The main event is a top `5 featherweight match-up, number 5 ranked Renato “Moicano” Carneiro versus number 12 Chan Sung Jung “The Korean Zombie”.

Brazil’s Carneiro is 5-2 in 7 trips into the octagon. The 30-year-old from Brasilia looks to rebound from a February TKO loss to former champion Jose Aldo. Carneiro is known for his striking, but in fact has all 6 of his finishes by rear naked choke, including his UFC 227 win over Cub Swanson.

South Korea’s Jung is an aggressive striker with an under rated and creative submission game. Jung has been is epic battles with Leonard Garcia and secured win by 5 different submission holds. Since returning to action after in 2017, after completing Military with his home country, “The Korean Zombie” has gone 1-1. A first-round knockout of Dennis Bermudez & a 5th round knockout loss to Yair Rodriguez. Jung has 12 of his 14 wins by stoppage for a 78% finishing rate, with two-thirds by submission.

Moicano is two years the younger and comes in with a 4” height advantage. Even with that edge in height their arm reach is the same at 72”. The Carenireo advantage is in the legs where he is measured at 42.5” to Jung’s 38.5”. The long limbs of Carneiro have proven a tough test for any of his opponents to solve. Like he did against knockout artist Jeremy Stephens, I expect “Moicano” to attempt to pick Jung apart from distance and frustrate Jung with that long style, which could cause “The Korean Zombie” to become reckless, possibly exposing himself for a counter strike.

The co-main event is a top 15 Bantamweight rematch, number 10 John “Hands of Stone” Lineker up against number 12 Rob Font. Lineker came away victorious in their first encounter at UFC 198. Lineker is a Brazilian with a 58% finishing rate and knockouts have accounted for 14 of his 18 stoppage wins. Font a Massachusetts native is also a striker with 7 of his 11 stoppages by knockout and has 69% finishing rate. The difference is that Lineker has natural one-punch knockout power, while Font is technical striker who picks guy apart.
