
Damaging Ground Strikes sees “Money” Cash in at UFC Paris
Brazil’s Renato “Money” Moicano went to France and displayed how much damage a Jiu Jitsu black belt can deliver.
The number eleven ranked Lightweight contender is now on a four-fight win streak. Moicano took Benoit Staint Denis down with a bodylock early in the first-round locking in a body triangle and splitting “The God of War’s” right eyebrow open with elbows, also causing a hematoma under Denis’s left eye with the ground and pound.
The raw of his home crowd saw “BSD” fire back to win the second round. The doctor assessment between rounds brought the end of the fight as Staint Denis’s vision was definitely impaired. That’s three finishes all on the ground for Moicano who eyes a top ten name.
Nassourdine Imavov has earned a third win in a row over a ranked contender. Brendan Allen got a takedown in the first fifteen seconds of the bout remaining in top position for the whole round. Countless single attempts from Allen would fail over the next ten minutes. Imavov taking the top position in the second forcing Allen to his back after a failed attempt. Imaovo’s takedown defense and counter punching would take the third round. Imavov called for a title shot but it’s likely he’ll need at least one more win before that happens.
William Gomis is now 4-0 and on a 12-fight win streak after taking a split decision win over Joanderson Brito. Gomis got an early take down to secure the first. Brito had an arm-triangle deep for minutes in the second round. Brito scored a takedown with some ground and pound over two minutes of control time. Gomis counter left hook scored on the feet and a front choke that forced Brito to his back in the final thirty seconds of the fight. A truly could have gone either way decision.
Bryan Battle could be facing ranked competition very soon after his sixth win in seven appearances inside the octagon. Kevin Jousset nullified Battles early takedown attempts using his judo to create space. The Jousset left hook was finding a home while Battle fired back with a variety of combinations. Avoiding the Jousset left hook in the second, Battle kept his pace and sat down even more on hir right hand forcing herb Dean to jump in for a standing TKO stoppage.
Morgan Charriere put short notice replacement Gabriel Miranda on a highlight scoring a second-round knockout. As Charriere & Miranda separated from a clinch Miranda spun and Charriere left into the hook Mark Hunt style for his 11th knockout win.
Matt Frevola seemed to be on his way to a finish in the first having a mounted guillotine Fares Ziam survived and finished the first battering Frevola in the clinch after being zinged by a right hand. The momentum for Zaim carried to the seconds as his hooks scored where the wild hooks of Frevola found air. The third round Ziam went to make a statement initiating the wrestling. From having Frevola’s back against the cage, “Smile Killer” let go over the control and Frevola turned into a perfectly timed knee for a clean knock out. Fiam is now on a four-fight win streak after collecting his first finish in six UFC wins.
Ion Cutelaba welcomed Ivan Erslan to the octagon with a grueling high paced battle. Both landed heavy shots in the first. Cutelaba took the fight to the ground in the second and while Erslan took top position in the third, the split decision went in Cutelaba’s favor.
The unbeaten record of Oumar Sy is intact after going the distance with Da Woon Jung. Sy’s speed advantage was hard for Jung to catch up with as Sy led the dance and score a couple takedowns for the win.
It’s now a four-fight win streak and wins in six of his last seven for Ludovit Klein. Roosevelt Roberts replacing Nickolas Motta on short notice had his moments in a first round that primarily played out on the feet. Kelin separated himself with three takedowns in the final two rounds to secure the decision.
Taylor Lapilus made it three wins in four fights. Just like his last two wins Lapilus’s victory over Vince Morales came on the scorecards. The Frenchmen battered Morales with kicks to the body and knees up the middle. It was a task closing distance as Lasilus kept on his footwork firing straight punches.
There’s not many stand out prospects in the Women’s Bantamweight division, but Ailin Perez is commanding attention. The attention may have started from twerking but the results in the octagon now stand at four wins in a row after submitting Darya Zheleznyakova. The week wasn’t perfect as many wondered allowed if Perez should have been allowed to compete after visibly shaking while missing weight by half a pound. Perez relentless for her takedown secured her submission win from a arm-triangle choke while still being in Zheleznyakova’s half guard.
Daniel Barez scored his first win in the UFC put dueling Victor Altamirano for a decision win. Barez set the tone knocking Altamirano down in first with a short straight right hand. The Spaniard survived being knocked down by a spinning backfist in the third answering back with another right hand knock down to maintain decision.
For the second time as professionals this time on short notice, Portugal’s Jacqueline Cavalcanti beat Frances Nora Cornelle by decision. Cornolle had a strong start getting her takedown in the first. Cavalcanti stuffed the takedowns over the final ten minutes walking down Cornelle and scoring from the outside. That’s five wins in a row and a 3-0 start to her UFC career for Cavalcanti.
In a somewhat confusing scene Chris Duncan put Bolaji Oki to sleep ending a nine-fight win streak. Duncan tripped Oki and jumped on a guillotine during the get up. The wild part was after a struggle Oki popped his head out only for Duncan to alert the ref that Oki was asleep. Duncan’s second submission win of his career brings his UFC record to 3-1.
