Championship Doubleheader Announced for UFC 311
Dana White has announced a championship doubleheader for the UFC’s debut event at the newest arena in LA.
January 18th the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California will host UFC 311. The card will see both the UFC Lightweight & Bantamweight world championships on the line.
In the main event it’s a rematch a long time in the making as Islam Makhachev (26-1) defends his UFC Lightweight Championship against the number one contender Armen Tsarukyan (22-3).
Makhachev currently sits as the top pound for pound fighter in all MMA. The Dagestan is wrestler a pupil of former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov who’s on a 14 fight win streak. The last four victories have come with the UFC title hanging in the balance. The 5th of those 14 wins came in April of 2019 by unanimous decision over Arman Tsarukyan. Since that fight Tsarukyan has won nine of ten. The Russian fighter secured his title shot at UFC 300 defeating former champion Charles Oliveira by split decision.
In the co-main event Merab Dvalishvili (18-4) looks to defend the UFC Bantamweight title for the first title against the challenge of unbeaten Umar Nurmagomedov (18-0).
Dvalishvili captured the UFC Bantamweight title after domination Sean O’Malley for the better part of five rounds at UFC 306. The culmination of a run that saw Dvalishvili beat 6 world champions. The Georgian is cardio king using his pace as a weapon constantly throwing strikes or hunting a takedown. Umar Nurmagomedov is 6-0 in the UFC. The number two ranked contender in the division has a mix of Nurmagomedov wrestling combined with the effortless throw spinning kicks and pop on his punches. Nurmagomedov’s title opportunity was assured after his lone win over a top ten ranked fighter, a conniving decision win over Cory Sandhagen.
