Joaquin Buckley – I feel like I’m going to leapfrog over Shavkat

The UFC Tampa card has been built around ascending Welterweight Joaquin Buckley.  “New Mensa” enters his first UFC main event on the strength of a five-fight win streak since dropping down 15 lbs.

The complexion of the fight changed greatly when UFC Welterweight champion Belal Muhammad was forced to withdraw from his title defense at UFC 310. Buckley went from facing Ian Garry, who would also be his first UFC 5-rounder to former interim champion Colby Covington. Two vastly different styles. Garry a striker who prefers to operate ate long distance while Covington implements a high pace wrestling attack featuring volumes of strikes.

Plus, there had been a lot of effort into making the Garry fight.

“We were promoting Buck versus Cuck and it was going to be the biggest thing around, but at the end of the day I feel like me and Colby. That’s a big fight too. Someone that’s won the interim title, a person that’s fought for the world title three times even though he lost. He has a big name.”

With Colby’s name and championship experience, Buckley can see a win on Saturday night placing him in prime position for a tile shot.

“I feel like I’m going to leapfrog over Shavkat. I feel like he’s injury prone too. I feel like he always gets injured, something always wrong with him. He might not even show up to the fight. It might be me and Belal next year”.
