Heavyweight Showdown in Abu Dhabi: Aspinall Faces Gane at UFC 321

Tom Aspinall set to make first defense in Abu Dhabi.

The UFC Heavyweight Championship will be on the line in the main event of UFC 321 on October 25th at the Etihad Arena, when Tom Aspinall defends against former interim champion and number one contender Ciryl Gane.

Aspinall was recently elevated to undisputed champion from interim champion when Jon Jones opted for retirement rather than title unification, even though Jones has apparently retracted his retirement in lieu of the announcement of a UFC at the White House.

Shortly before UFC 295 where Jon Jones was scheduled to face Stipe Miocic for Jones UFC Heavyweight title “Bones” suffered a torn pec. Tom Aspinall & Sergei Pavlovich met in the UFC 295 main event for an interim Heavyweight title. In 69 seconds Aspinall captured gold and started his campaign to fight Jones. Eight months after winning the title Aspinall needed just 60 seconds to take care of Curtis Blaydes and avenge his lone loss in the UFC, which came due to injury.

Aspinall resume and campaign failed to intrigue Jones leading to his backing of the title.

Aspinall now has his sights on Frenchman Ciryl Gane. In 2021 Gane defeated Derrick Lewis by third round TKO winning an interim Heavyweight title. Since failing to unify the titles when he fought Francis N’Gannou at UFC 270 Gane has won three of his last four fights. The blemish comes in a being submitted by Jon Jones at UFC 285 in a bout that was for the vacant Heavyweight crown. The 35-year-old is coming off a controversial split decision win over Alexander Volkov from UFC 310.
