Moreno Making Quick Turnaround to Headline in Home Country
Former UFC Flyweight Champion Brandon Moreno will headline when the UFC returns to Mexico this February.
UFC Fight Night takes place February 28th at Arena CDMX in Mexico City, with Moreno stepping into the main event slot in front of his home crowd.
In the headliner, the No. 4 ranked Brandon “The Assassin Baby” Moreno faces No. 7 ranked Asu Almabayev of Kazakhstan.
The announcement comes as a surprise, as Moreno is coming off a controversial TKO loss to Tatsuro Taira. Still, adversity has never been unfamiliar territory for the first UFC champion from Mexico. Moreno was once picked last among the flyweights on The Ultimate Fighter, later released from the promotion after just five UFC appearances, only to fight his way back to capture interim and undisputed UFC titles.
Now, Moreno once again finds himself in a position where the odds aren’t entirely in his favor — but history suggests that’s exactly where he thrives.
Almabayev brings a strong wrestling and grappling base, having earned six wins in seven UFC appearances, including two submission victories. At the UFC’s debut event in Qatar, Almabayev scored the biggest win of his career, rallying late and securing a third-round submission over Alex Perez in a dramatic comeback.
