Rousey vs. Carano Superfight Lands on Netflix

In a move few saw coming, Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano are officially coming out of retirement to face one another in a long-awaited superfight.

The bout will be promoted by Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) as the company makes its debut entry into mixed martial arts. The event is scheduled for May 16 at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles and will stream live on Netflix.

Rumblings of Rousey’s return to combat sports have circulated for months. During a recent podcast appearance, Rousey revealed that discussions regarding this matchup had even taken place with the Ultimate Fighting Championship within the past year. Veteran MMA journalist Ariel Helwani added further intrigue, noting that negotiations for this fight date back as far as 12 years.

Rousey, the first woman to hold a UFC championship and arguably the biggest female star in the sport’s history, has been retired from MMA competition for a decade.

A former Olympic judoka turned global crossover attraction, she helped push women’s MMA into the mainstream.

Carano, widely regarded as one of the true pioneers of women’s mixed martial arts, competed under the EliteXC banner and famously challenged Cris Cyborg in Strikeforce in 2009. She has been officially retired from MMA for 17 years.

In recent years, both fighters have found success outside the cage. Rousey appeared in films including The Expendables 3 and later transitioned into professional wrestling with WWE. Carano appeared in Deadpool and starred in the first season of The Mandalorian.

Both women remain iconic figures in MMA history, credited with helping pave the way for the current generation of female fighters thriving in combat sports today.

As of now, no additional bouts have been announced for the card. But it is known that the bout is scheduled for five, five minute rounds at 145 lbs.
