Colby Covington has a New Team full of Positive Energy
Elite level fighter is a term thrown around often. The group of fighters who have had UFC titles around their waist is a select few. Colby Covington has been amongst the best in the world for the last five years. A spot he doesn’t plan on relinquishing anytime soon.
The former Interim champion Colby Covington saw a Bat single in the sky swooping in to save UFC Tampa after Ian Garry was elevated to UFC 310. It’s the kind of opportunity Covington has been looking for to prove his performance against Leon Edwards wasn’t indicative of who he is. A loss that left Covington feeling the negativity.
“Forgetting about the chatter. Not paying attention to anything or anybody’s opinion. Everybody has an opinion in this world and most of the time there like a**holes, they stink. Just, letting go of everything and being free again. Being who I am. Surrounding myself with positive good energy. I got new Coaches around me. I got a new team around me. I got people that are really uplifting me and giving me energy that I didn’t have before. I feel better than I’ve ever felt.”
The fighter coach relationship is crucial and involves huge levels of trust. At the top of the sport, it’s pivotal for a fighter to find what works best for them.
“I had to go find a new striking that was going to give me that positive energy and have the time for me. The old coaches were busy with family. They had other fighters they had to tend to. Go to fights overseas. So, I need someone that was really going to be there for me, for Colby Covington incorporated and my business especially in a short notice fight like this, three weeks. You know I needed them to be there every day and train on my schedule at nighttime. You know to simulate the time the fight will be at and acclimate to that time. I brought in Roberto Solic; I think he’s the future. He’s an absolute specimen. He’s the greatest training partner I’ve ever had in my career.”
Covington is used to the marquee and the five round fights that come with them. But at this stage in his career, he can see the benefits of a short notice fight.
“Most fighters are scared to take short notice fight because they think they need an eight-to-ten-week camp to prepare to really get their mind and body in the right place. But I feel these short training camps are smarter and better for you. Cause now you’re not putting as much wear and tear, not worn down mentally & physically from the hard training over the weeks. I feel fresh. I feel rejuvenated and I feel like this is the wave of the future. Like I should just stay ready all the time and take short notice fights. Then you’re not going to beat your body up training and sparring for an eight-week ten-week training camp.”
The fight takes place in Covington’s adopted home state of Florida. Being just a three-hour drive across the state, Covington says he has something extra special planned.
“I have a surprise guest for Saturday who’ll be walking me out.”
Saturday night Covington gets the opportunity to end 2024 the way he wanted to end 2023 with his hand raised and well see if the adjustments to his camp and team have paid off.
