The card has been built around the sendoff into retirement of Lafayette’s own Dustin “The Daimond” Poirier. In the main event it’s a trilogy fight as the former interim Lightweight champion challenges Max “Blessed” Holloway for the BMF title. In 2012 Holloway received the call he’d been waiting for, one from the UFC. The call led to facing Poirier on short notice at UFC 143. A bout the Diamond won by submission from a triangle-armbar combination. Their paths crossed again seven-years later at UFC 236. This time with an interim title hanging in the balance Poirier’s punching power took a unanimous decision win.
Poirier already has the series victory but how much nicer is it to exist the octagon one-last time with your hand raised and new belt around the waist to go along with the flowers. For Holloway it’s an opportunity to erase the memory of his first knockout loss and reestablish himself as a contender in his new division with a win over an all-time great.
