New Main Event: Sterling Faces Zalal at April 25 UFC Fight Night

A new main event appears to be in place for the April 25th UFC Fight Night at the Apex.

It was originally announced that No. 6 ranked welterweight contender Sean Brady would face No. 9 Joaquin Buckley in the evening’s headliner. However, a change in direction appears to have been made.

Journalist Leo Guimaraes has reported that a new main event featuring two top ten featherweight contenders has been slotted in for the April 25th card.

The new headliner is expected to see No. 5 ranked featherweight Aljamain Sterling take on No. 7 ranked contender Youssef Zalal.

The fight announcement comes less than two weeks after Sterling made headlines outside the UFC octagon for his take on the current state of UFC matchmaking. The former bantamweight champion, who successfully defended his title three times, competed at Real American Freestyle where he defeated former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson. Sterling has also been building momentum inside the octagon, most recently earning a decision victory over former featherweight title challenger Brian Ortega in Shanghai last August.

Zalal’s path back to the UFC was one of persistence and evolution. After going 3-3-1 in his first seven UFC appearances, “The Moroccan Devil” was released from the promotion in 2022. Determined to prove he belonged among the sport’s elite, Zalal rebuilt his career on the regional scene. He strung together five victories, including three wins in one night to capture a King of Sparta tournament title.

Training out of Factory X, Zalal has transformed both his game and the perception surrounding him. Riding a five-fight win streak, he earned another opportunity with the UFC and has taken full advantage. Since returning to the octagon, Zalal has collected five victories, four of them by submission, including an armbar finish of former interim featherweight title challenger Josh Emmett.

This is the kind of matchup that builds intrigue through its layered storylines. For Sterling, it represents another opportunity for a former champion to take a pivotal step toward remaining in title contention. For Zalal, it’s the chance for a surging contender to prove he belongs among the division’s elite and potentially place himself firmly in the mix for a future title shot.
