Aljamain Sterling Strengthens Title Case; Upsets and Breakouts Highlight Action-Packed Card
Former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling continues to make a compelling case for another title opportunity—this time at featherweight—after a dominant decision win over Youssef Zalal. Entering the bout as the No. 5-ranked contender, Sterling showcased his veteran savvy by capitalizing on Zalal’s small mistakes, repeatedly turning them into positional control.
While Zalal found a moment of success in the third round by taking Sterling’s back, it proved to be a brief bright spot in an otherwise one-sided affair. Sterling reasserted control in the championship rounds, securing mount and back control in both the fourth and fifth frames. At 36 years old, “Funk Master” appears locked in on one final run at UFC gold.
The co-main event delivered a notable upset as Joselyne Edwards (No. 11) outworked Norma Dumont (No. 3) to earn a hard-fought decision victory. Dumont started strong with a takedown in the opening round, but Edwards reversed position late—foreshadowing a shift in momentum. Over the final ten minutes, Edwards controlled the pace, pressing forward with hooks and low kicks to secure the final two rounds and the biggest win of her career.
In the feature bout, Rafa Garcia extended his winning streak to three with a unanimous decision over Alexander Hernandez. Garcia’s relentless pressure and tight defensive boxing wore down Hernandez, leaving him bloodied and unable to match the pace.
A Fight of the Night contender saw England’s Davey Grant spoil the debut of Colombia’s Adrian Luna Martinetti. Grant delivered a punishing performance, landing over 60 leg kicks while mixing in sharp teep kicks and powerful hooks. Martinetti showed grit, rallying in the third round, but ultimately fell short in an action-packed battle.
Raoni Barcelos made a strong argument for a ranking with a split decision win over Montel Jackson. Despite being dropped early by a sharp right hand, Barcelos rallied behind relentless forward pressure and timely takedowns, overcoming significant damage—including a compromised eye—to edge out the victory.
Opening the main card, Ryan Spann delivered one of the night’s most dramatic finishes, knocking out grappling legend Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida in the second round. After threatening with a guillotine, Spann forced a striking exchange and capitalized with a crushing left hook–right cross combination that sent Buchecha crashing to the canvas.
Elsewhere on the card, Eric McConico rebounded from a tough opening round to earn a decision over Rodolfo Vieira, using precise striking to control the latter stages. Jackson McVey secured his first UFC win in emphatic fashion, finishing Sedriques Dumas with a first-round D’Arce choke after a sharp uppercut knockdown.
Australia’s Michelle Montague continued her rise with a dominant decision over Mayra Bueno Silva, utilizing early and consistent grappling control. The loss marks a difficult stretch for Bueno Silva, who has now dropped five straight bouts.
Short-notice replacement Cody Durden impressed with a grappling-heavy decision win over Jafel Filho, while Francis Marshall made the most of a late booking by outpointing Lucas Brennan with a wrestling-based attack.
In additional action, Victor Valenzuela rallied to defeat veteran Max Griffin by decision after overcoming an early deficit, and Talita Alencar opened the card with a grappling-heavy win over Julia Polastri.
With standout performances, rising contenders, and a few major shake-ups, the event added new intrigue across multiple divisions—none more so than featherweight, where Sterling has firmly planted himself in the title conversation.
