Thad Jean Overcomes Adversity to Capture PFL Welterweight Championship in Washington, D.C.
Fight week for PFL Washington, D.C. took an unexpected turn, but the night’s main event still delivered plenty of drama.
The expectation entering the week was that unbeaten Thad Jean would face his toughest challenge yet against Shamil Musaev. Instead, a failed weight cut forced Musaev out of the championship bout, elevating Ernesto Rodriguez from the preliminary card into the main event. The late change led many to believe Jean would cruise to victory, but Rodriguez made sure the new matchup was anything but easy.
Inside CareFirst Arena, Jean (12-0) retained his unbeaten record by stopping Rodriguez (11-2) at 2:44 of the third round to claim the vacant PFL Welterweight World Championship.
Jean established control early behind a sharp jab that consistently forced Rodriguez backward. A knee from the clinch opened a cut beneath Rodriguez’s left eye, and it appeared Jean was closing in on an early finish. Rodriguez survived the opening round and completely shifted the momentum in the second, dropping Jean with a crushing overhand right before threatening with a rear-naked choke.
Faced with the greatest adversity of his professional career, Jean responded like a champion. In the third round, he reversed a Rodriguez takedown attempt, took his opponent’s back, and unleashed unanswered strikes until the referee stepped in.
The co-main event ended in devastating fashion as Rafael Xavier dismantled Tyson Pedro with a vicious kicking attack. Xavier repeatedly battered Pedro’s lead leg before switching upstairs with head kicks that staggered the Australian veteran. Once Pedro was trapped against the fence, Xavier unleashed a barrage of crushing elbows that sent him to the canvas, forcing a stoppage with just one second remaining in the opening round.
Fight of the Night honors belonged to Sullivan Cauley and Rasul Magomedov, who engaged in a grueling three-round battle. Magomedov surprised many by successfully mixing in wrestling against the former collegiate standout early in the fight. Cauley responded with the most aggressive striking performance of his career, but Magomedov took over the decisive third round by opening a cut beneath Cauley’s left eye and scoring a late knockdown with a powerful left hook to earn the victory.
One of the night’s brightest prospects was the ultra-athletic Eliezer Kubanza, who displayed a well-rounded skill set in his victory over Chris Mixan. After landing damaging strikes from the ground, Kubanza transitioned seamlessly into a D’Arce choke, securing the second-round submission—his first professional victory by submission.
Bryce Meredith bounced back from the first loss of his career with a dominant unanimous decision over Michael Cyr. While his elite wrestling remained the foundation of his success, Meredith showcased increased aggression and several creative submission attempts, signaling continued development as a prospect.
Former PFL Africa tournament champion Nkosi Ndebele made an impressive United States debut by earning a dominant unanimous decision over UFC veteran Brandon Davis, while Coby Bradford overcame early striking adversity against Char Yard before securing a second-round rear-naked choke after taking the fight to the mat.
Opening the card, Noah Hermosillo enjoyed a successful professional debut, using relentless grappling and top control over three rounds to earn a convincing decision against Jacob Pais.
Although the main event changed dramatically just days before fight night, PFL Washington, D.C. still delivered an entertaining championship showcase. Thad Jean answered the biggest questions surrounding his career by overcoming real adversity, while several emerging prospects used the spotlight to announce themselves as names to watch in the PFL.
