BKB 59: Fernandez Retains, Ulloa Captures Gold in Tijuana
Bare-knuckle boxing headed south of the border as BKB 59 brought a championship-heavy card to Tijuana, Mexico, with two world titles on the line.
In the main event, Julian Fernandez put his Police Gazette Diamond Belt on the line against Dan Podmore in a six-round Super Cruiserweight championship bout. In the co-main event, Cecilia Ulloa and Andy Nguyen battled for the vacant BKB Super Flyweight World Championship.
Fernandez successfully defended his title in dramatic fashion, stopping Podmore by knockout at 1:12 of the second round.
Podmore appeared to have the early advantage, dropping Fernandez with a left hook in the opening round. Fernandez answered late in the round by attacking the body before completely shifting the momentum in the second.
A crushing left hand sent Podmore down and brought the fight to an end, allowing Fernandez to retain his Police Gazette Diamond Belt.
Ulloa left Tijuana with championship gold of her own, capturing the vacant Super Flyweight title with a third-round TKO after Nguyen’s corner threw in the towel.
Ulloa consistently backed Nguyen toward the ropes and overwhelmed her with combinations of straight punches throughout the three rounds. With Nguyen unable to answer the sustained attack, her corner called a halt to the contest.
The card also featured a wild encounter between Romerio Ovalle and Marco Villa that ended in a no contest at 45 seconds of the third round. A headbutt left Ovalle with his left eye swollen shut, while Villa absorbed heavy punishment that left his face battered and his white shorts stained red.
Pablo Anguiano needed less than a minute to end his fight with Ricardo Rueda, landing a devastating left hook to the body for a first-round knockout.
Adrian Gonzalez fought through a cut above his left eye and answered back by dropping Javier Santiago Valverde twice on his way to victory.
Abraham Huerta battled back after being dropped twice in the opening round to score a comeback victory over Erick Eduardo Soria.
Jonathan Duran also overcame adversity, fighting through a deep gash near his hairline before stopping Kevin Sanchezin the second round. Duran overwhelmed Sanchez with short punches along the ropes, eventually forcing the referee to step in.
BKB 59 delivered championship drama from Tijuana, with Fernandez successfully defending his Police Gazette Diamond Belt and Ulloa becoming the newest BKB Super Flyweight champion.
