Today at Imbibe night club Chavez Promotions held a press conference to officially announce “Winter War”.
Saturday December 12th at the Sports Complex at 5 points Chavez Promotion will present “Winter War” a double header day of boxing with amateur fights from 1-5, a break, and then the pro take the ring at 7. A ticket purchased for the pro card will also get you into the amateur event.
The main event will see former WBC Title holder, the south valley’s own Josh “Pitbull” Torres (14-4-2) against Billing’s, Montana’s, Daniel Gonzales (12-37-2), who’s 2-1 in his last 3.
Albuquerque’s own Alex Holguin (5-1), who’s on a 4 fight win streak, takes on in his pro debut from the Farmington Fight Factory Serrano Farley. Also making his pro debut out of Atrisco Boxing Ronnie Baca will square off with Antonio Sulorzano of Garden City, Kansas. Opening up the show will be Michael “Coca” Gallegos, who’s fighting for the first time in nearly 2 years, against Tucson Arizona’s Jose Pena.
For Torres this fight will be up two weight classes to 152 lbs. instead of around 140 lbs. where his last 3 fight have taken place; going into the future Torres stated that he will be returning to 147 lbs. (Welterweight in Boxing). Pitbull also invited everyone this coming Monday (Dec. 7) he will be holding an open workout at 3 pm at the Jack Candelaria Community Center. Torres on the change of weight classes “I feel strong, the power is there”.
During the PC Joe Chavez of Chavez promotions indicated to the possibility of Roy Jones Promotions and other big fights coming to the Convention Center in the near future. “People say there’s no fighters coming up, there are, and that’s why where having this amateur show; and we want people to know who they are”. “I’m telling the press, start giving these amateurs some recognition,they’re the future”.There is also talk of a southwest amateur tournament in the summer. Chavez promotions is looking to have 5 event next year.
