The Crego family as well as our boxing community here in Albuquerque has taken a devastating blow. Speaking from what I’ve seen and heard from my fellow colleagues in the sport, Pops was really that; “Pops”.He might not have been in the gym giving directions, but for damn sure he was making sure the fighters had everything they needed to make training camp as easy as possible. “Pops” helped out so many fighters. He was there with a helping hand for our Home Town Pugilist like Johnny “Mi vida loca” Tapia, Fidel “The Atrisco Kid” Maldonado, David Martinez, Matthew “Diamondboy” Griego, as well as myself, just to name a few. There has been so much help and inspiration from Pops it is truly mind blowing.
I will be interviewing fellow hometown fighters and coaches, that have got to brush the shoulders of this great man, that has impacted all of us with his loving and caring personality. A impact that will never be forgotten. Keep on the look out for our Pops dedicated episode. RIP Tom “Pops” Crego you will truly be missed.
