Torres & Griego returning to the Ring at Event Honoring Johnny Tapia
Hard to believe but we’re approaching the 10 year anniversary of the passing of Duke City icon, world champion pugilist Johnny Tapia.
In honor of the occasion Tapia Promotions, led by Johnny‘s widow Teresa Tapia will be hosting a one of a kind day of fights at the Paradise Hills Golf Cours.
The event will be June 17. Sources have told us at Caged Minds that the event will feature amateur action during the day and a professional card at night. But on the released poster there is no mention of the rumored amateur card. The professional card is expected to see several boxing matches and a pair of bareknuckle boxing bouts.
The South Valley’s own Josh “Pitbull” Torres, a multiple time WBC Titleist and New Mexico state champion will be in the main event. Torres is a power puncher who’s scored eight of his last nine wins by knockout. The head man at Team Pitbull will have a busy day as his protégé Maximus “Gladiator” Moya will have his second pro fight on the card. Moya made a successful pro debut in April at Legacy Boxing Promotions “Battle at 5 Points” scoring a first round knockout.
“The Diamond Boy” will also be returning to to the ring. Due to circumstances outside of his control Matt Griego hasn’t fought since winning the ABF Continental America’s flyway title by 10 round decision over Jeronil Borres. That was back in March of 2020. With the motivation of his young family and firstborn child, Griego is hungry to get back on track and continue to make a name for himself.
The event is sure to be a special one for both fighters. Torres spent many of his early years in boxing training under the guidance of the late world champion. And as long as I’ve been watching Matthew Griego he dawn comparisons to Johnny Tapia.
