Rumored Bout- Jones Defends Against Teixeira Super Bowl Weekend
The internet is abuzz as it’s being reported that Jon “Bones” Jones (19-1) has requested his next title defense not be a rematch with Alexander Gustafsson, but be top contender against Glover Teixeira (22-2); and it appears the UFC will oblige the request.
Nothing is finalized but it’s expected that the fight will take place on Super Bowl weekend February 1, in New Jersey.
Jon Jones is coming off of a 5 round war with Alexadner Gustafsson, that is a Fight of the Year candidate. The bout saw Jones with stand big punches and a cut over his right eye to prevail with a unanimous decision, setting a new record for consecutive title defenses as in the Light Heavyweight division with 6. Jones thus far in his title run has defeated Rampage Jackson (SUB), Lyoto Machida (SUB), Rashad Evans (UD), Vitor Belfrot (SUB), Chael Sonnen (TKO), and Alexadner Gustafsson (UD).
Glover Teixeira is a protege of former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell. Teixeira has trained at The Pit, Nova Uniao, BlackHouse, and American Top Team. Currently the 33 year old Brazilian, is on a 20 fight win streak. In the UFC Teixeira has claimed victories over Kyle Kingsbury (SUB), Fabio Maldonaso (TKO), Rampage Jackson (UD), James Te Huna (SUB), and Ryan Bader (TKO).
