UFC 266 gains Diaz-Lawler 2

Two MMA fan favorites are set to run it back 17-years after their first encounter.

The co-main event of UFC 266 will see a rematch between former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz & former UFC welterweight champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler. The fight will follow in the footsteps of Nate Diaz vs. Leon Edwards and will be a non-title fight scheduled for five rounds. Diaz-Lawler one took place at UFC 47 and saw Nick Diaz win by 2nd round knockout.

Nick (26-9) the older of the two Diaz brothers is a cult-hero to in many MMA circles. His mix of Boxing & Jiu Jitsu style combined with raw real emotions made him beloved to many. Nick first fought for the UFc at UFC 44 in 2003 submitting Jeremy Jackson by armbar. Diaz would part ways with the UFC in 2006. In 2009 the Stockton, California native joined the Strikeforce promotion. In 2010 he would the Strikeforce 170 lb. title and racked up five title defenses before joining the UFC. Nick last fought in 2015 losing a decision to former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. The fight was later changed to a no contest after Silva tested positive for a performance enhancer.

Lawler (28-15) has been competing in MAM since 2001. After four wins the Lawler signed with the UFC. After time with the IFL, Elite XC, & Strikeforce, Lawler returned to the UFC in 2013. In 2014 a decision win over Johny Hendricks would see Lawler achieve his ultimate goal of winning the UFC title. The fighter nicknamed “Ruthless” defended the crown twice before being dethroned. The 39-year-old will look to halt a four-fight skid.

UFC 266 is September 25th in Las Vegas.
