Top three fights for UFC 279 shaken up
Fight week for UFC 279 has been chaotic to say the least and weigh-in took the wild to another level.
The fight week press conference normally brings fireworks but for 279 it was never even able to get started. Ever Porten skirmish between Kevin Holland and Khamzat Chimaev led to the Nate Diaz camp getting involved in the scuffle forcing the UFC to cancel the press conference.
The situation continued to evolve as videos across social media showed Kevin Holland & Chimaev’s teammate Darren Till exchanging worlds in the host hotel.
The most consequential to the part of this saga came at the official weigh-ins as Khamzat Chimaev misses weight. Stepping on the scale 7.5 lbs. over the 171 lb. welterweight limit.
The Ultimate Fighting Championships resolution to the problem will see Tony Ferguson against Nate Diaz in a welterweight main event after Diaz was unwilling to fight someone who missed weight. Ferguson was going to face Li Jingliang. Both did successfully make weight.
The new co-main event will give Khamzat Chimaev and Kevin Holland a chance to settle what they started backstage prior to the press conference. Holland had been scheduled to meet Daniel Rodriguez in a 180 lb. Catchweight bout. The last two men on the on the board Ali Jingliang & Daniel Rodriguez both made weight and will now meet in a catchweight bout.
UFC 279 takes Saturday September 10th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Nevada.
