Featherweight champion to Fight for the Lightweight title at UFC 284

The UFC Lightweight title and the sports pound for pound number one ranking will be on the line in the main event of UFC 284.

Reigning Featherweight king Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski will challenge newly crowned UFC Lightweight champion Islam Makhchev for his title. Following a decisive third win over Max Holloway, Volkanovski made his intentions to becoming a two division champion very  clear.  Since dethroning Max Holloway, the Australian has defended successfully four times. While he skilled in all aspects of the game Volkanovski tends to keep his fights on the feet overloading his opponents with multiple techniques. Makhchev is on an 11-fight win streak. The Dagestan born fighter has finished his last five fights including submitting Charles Oliveira by head and arm choke at UFC 280 to win the belt. Realizing the lofty expectations of following in his mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov’s champion legacy.

With the Featherweight champion shooting for a goal only accomplished by Conor Mcgregor, the promotion will crown an interim featherweight champ as Yair Rodriguez battles Josh Emmett. Rodriguez is one the flashiest strikers in the company  able to pull of spinning and jump techniques effortlessly. The TUF Latino 1 winner last fought in July stopping two time title challenger Brian Ortega in the first round. The Mexican fighter has long been considered one the division most exciting fighters. Emmett is a boxer wrestler with one punch knockout power. The Sacramento based fighter made his mark with his power punching putting Ricardo Lamas, Michael Johnson, And Mirsad Bektoc out. The Team Alpha member has won five in a row. The last win in June came by split decision over Calvin Kattar.

UFC 284 is February 11th at the RAC Arena at n Perth, Australia.

Additionally top middleweights former champion Robert Whittaker of Australia and Brazil’s Paulo Costa are scheduled for a meeting in the nights featured fight. Whittaker  dismantled former title challenger Marvin Vettori in France this past September. A month prior Costa sent sent Luke Rockhold into retirement after hitting the former champion with every utensil in the draw.
