RING WARS 18 Delivers on Action

Story by Franklin Romero

Make that 12-0 now for Albuquerque’s flyweight champion Abraham “The Hammer” Perez  who laid down the hammer for 8 rounds to win by a decision  (79-73, 80-72, 77-75) over Angel Geovanny “El Rayito” Mesa Morales who now drops to 9-4-3.

Morales opened up strong in the first round, however, Perez was patient, consistent and pursued Morales throughout the night, especially in the later rounds. Morales absorbed Perez’s flurries and even responded with some of his own but was not enough to win in front of the crowd at the boisterous El Paso Coliseum.

In the lightweight division Andres Rey of Albuquerque fought well for 2 rounds and was coming into his own when he suffered a knock down in the 3rd round and even though he overcame well and battled hard, one could say he edged it out and won 3 rounds. It just wasn’t enough to overcome the point deficit as he was handed his first loss 58-55, 59-54, 57-56.  Gary Hampton of Fort Worth to his credit capitalized on the knockdown and did a good job of fighting off Rey’s flurries and responding with his own. Hampton now travels back home to Fort Worth with a “W” on the road over a strong and upcoming contender.
