The Return: Pro Boxing Comes Back to Northern New Mexico

Professional Boxing Returns to Northern New Mexico After Six-Year Hiatus – November 1st

Professional boxing is making its long-awaited return to Northern New Mexico for the first time in six years on Friday, November 1st. And it’s not just a return — it’s The Return.

Renowned promoter Pat Holmes and Holmes Boxing, known for a streak of consecutive sellout shows, will host their first professional event since bringing Roberto Duran Jr. to the Marriott Pyramid in Albuquerque back in February 2020.

This card also marks the first pro boxing event in Northern New Mexico since Legacy Boxing Promotions held a show at Buffalo Thunder in August 2019.

In the main event, Española native Leanna Martinez (4-4) returns to the ring after a two-and-a-half-year layoff to take on Utah’s Maryguenn Vellinga (4-5-2). Vellinga is familiar with New Mexico fans, having gone six rounds with Katherine Renee Lindenmuth in Albuquerque earlier this year.

Also featured is local MMA legend and former King of the Cage champion “The San-I Warrior” Angelo Sanchez, who ends a decade-long retirement to face Joe Garcia (0-1) of Hobbs, NM, in a 170-pound showdown.

Another highlight of the night will be the professional boxing debut of UFC veteran Jerome “The Renegade” Rivera, who steps into the squared circle against Rony Liranzo (0-1) from the Dominican Republic.
