APFC 25 Amateur Title Fight Canceled After Gabe Bencomo Hospitalized During Weight Cut
One of the more highly anticipated fights scheduled for APFC 25 has unfortunately been canceled after complications from the weight cut forced Gabe “Barber Gabe” Bencomo to seek medical attention.
The fight was scheduled to take place at Isleta Resort & Casino, but instead of making the walk to the venue for the event, Bencomo was taken to the hospital after experiencing serious complications related to his weight cut.
The weigh-in process is one of the most demanding aspects of combat sports, with fighters often pushing their bodies to extreme limits to make the contracted weight. In Bencomo’s case, the cut resulted in kidney failure, an elevated heart rate and extremely low blood pressure, according to information provided to Caged Minds.
Fortunately, Bencomo received medical attention and hospital staff were able to stabilize his heart rate and blood pressure. His kidneys are also functioning properly, and Caged Minds can report that Bencomo has since been released from the hospital.
While the cancellation is undoubtedly a major setback for Bencomo, his health remains the priority.
The planned amateur title fight against Josh Thompson will not take place at APFC 25, but discussions about rescheduling the matchup have already begun.
Bencomo has quickly made an impression during his time competing in APFC. He has won both of his promotional appearances, earning an overhand-right knockout in one bout before following it up with a unanimous decision victory that showcased his wrestling ability.
Standing across from him was set to be New York-born, Texas-trained Josh Thompson, who brings a perfect finishing record into the matchup. Thompson has earned all of his victories by first-round knockout, making the stylistic matchup with Bencomo particularly intriguing.
For now, however, the most important result is that Bencomo is home and recovering.
The amateur title fight may have been postponed, but with both sides already discussing a potential rescheduled date, fans may not have to wait long to see Bencomo and Thompson finally settle things inside the cage.
