PFL and Francis Ngannou Split, Heavyweight Superstar Now a Free Agent

Former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou is once again a free agent after the Professional Fighters Leagueannounced it has released the Cameroonian knockout artist despite one fight remaining on his contract.

The news was first reported by journalist Mike Pendleton and later confirmed by the promotion. In an official statement, the league said:

“The Professional Fighters League has made the decision to part ways with Francis Ngannou. We have great respect for Francis as both an athlete and a person, and we wish him success in the next chapter of his combat sports career. The PFL remains focused on recruiting and signing the best athletes in the sport while continuing to deliver world-class competition for fans around the globe.”

Ngannou signed with the PFL in 2023 after leaving the Ultimate Fighting Championship following a lengthy contract dispute in 2022. The move was seen as one of the biggest signings in the promotion’s history, with Ngannou also expected to play a leadership role in the development of PFL Africa.

Despite the fanfare surrounding his arrival, Ngannou competed only once inside the PFL SmartCage. In October 2024 he captured the Super Fight Heavyweight title by stopping Brazilian heavyweight Renan Ferreira in the first round with ground-and-pound.

Outside of MMA, Ngannou pursued major boxing opportunities. He first stepped into the ring against heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, putting on a competitive performance against the undefeated star. He later faced former unified champion Anthony Joshua, suffering a knockout loss in the second round.

Now a free agent, Ngannou has several potential landing spots. A return to the UFC could once again be discussed, while opportunities in boxing remain lucrative. Promotions such as MVP Promotions and other boxing organizations could also pursue the heavyweight star.

Where “The Predator” lands next will be one of the biggest storylines in combat sports as the former UFC champion once again becomes one of the most sought-after heavyweights in the world.
