Tapia Legacy Lives On At May 30 Memorial Fight Festival In Albuquerque
The spirit of one of Albuquerque’s most beloved champions returns to center stage on May 30 as the Johnny Tapia Memorial Fight Festival brings professional boxing, live entertainment, and family legacy together for a special night at 1119 Candelaria Rd. NW, the former Leo’s Night Club.
More than just another fight card, the event celebrates the enduring impact of Johnny Tapia, the Albuquerque-born and raised world champion whose heart, style, and connection to the community made him a hometown icon. A five-time world champion across multiple weight classes, Tapia carried the pride of New Mexico into arenas around the world while never losing touch with the city that helped shape him. Years after his passing, his name still resonates deeply through Albuquerque boxing culture, and this festival looks to honor both his fighting spirit and his lasting influence on future generations.
Headlining the night is surging Albuquerque veteran Josh “Pitbull” Torres, who enters the event riding a seven-fight winning streak. Torres is coming off an impressive third-round TKO victory over Gerald Fuentes and continues to build momentum as one of the city’s most active and experienced professionals. Standing across from him will be rugged 50-fight veteran Diego Gonzalo Luque in an eight-round main event matchup that promises action and experience from opening bell to final round. The fight will be two months before Torres fights for a UBO in the main event of the Legacy Continues V.
Another local favorite, Clinton “Native Kid” Chavez, returns to action against El Paso’s Eduardo Montreal in a regional showdown between power punches that will bring added intensity to the card and is a front runner for fight of the night.
The Tapia family legacy will be showcased throughout the evening as the next generation continues carving their own paths in the sport. Fresh off successful professional debuts, Nicco Tapia returns to face four-fight veteran Tyrone Albert Adams, while Johnny Tapia Jr. takes on five-fight veteran Andrew Flamm. Jonathan Tapia will also look to secure his first professional victory when he squares off with James Anderson.
Beyond the fights, organizers are aiming to create a full community experience with live music, food, drinks, and an outdoor festival atmosphere surrounding the boxing action. The event reflects the energy and culture that Johnny Tapia himself represented — boxing woven together with Albuquerque pride, family, and entertainment.
For one night, the city once again gathers under the Tapia name, honoring a champion whose legacy still lives inside Albuquerque gyms, fighters, and fans alike.
