The first challenger to Emanuel Newton’s (23-7-1) Light Heavyweight throne will be Joey Beltran (15-10) at Bellator 124 on September 12th, at the Compuwae Arena in Plymouth Township, Michigan.Newton has won 5 fights in a row defeating Atanas Djambazov (SUB), Muhammed Lawal (KO), and Mikhail Zayats (UD) to win the season 8 Light Heavyweight tournament. Again defeated Muhammed Lawal to win the interim Light Heavyweight title; and then unified the belts taking a split decision from Attila Vegh.
Beltran member of the Alliance Trianing center is tough warrior and a fan favorite with his brawling style. Beltran is being given an incredibly unwarranted title shot being (3-7-0, 1nc) in his last 11; with most of those fight happening in the UFC. Beltran is 1-1 in Bellator coming off a submission of Valdimir Matyushenko, that ended a 2 fight losing streak.
