To get to 11 defenses, Johnson has to get past Borg at UFC 215
It’s official, standing between Demetrious Johnson and the record books is Ray Borg.
The main event of September 9th’s UFC 215, at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, will see Ray “The Tazmexican Devil” Borg challenging Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson for the UFC Flyweight title.
This fight was originally expected to happen in August, but after the UFC offered both parties the fight, Bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt suffered a back injury. The UFC reacted to the injury by wanting Johnson to no longer face Borg, but instead square off with former Bantamweight champion and Bantamweight number 1 contender TJ Dillashaw who has never fought at Flyweight. Johnson didn’t except the fight with Dillashaw, because Dillashaw is not in the weight class. After a intense public and private negotiation process, the fight that was originally offered to Demetrious Johnson, is the one that will happen.
Johnson the UFC’s first and only ever Flyweight champion, has managed to equal Anderson Silva’s record setting accomplishment of 10 title defenses. It was a gigantic disappointment the morning of UFC 213, when news broke that Amanda Nunes, for health reason, had withdrawn from her fight with Valentina Shevchenko. The fight as been rescheduled and will serve as the co-main event for UFC 215. With Nunes pulling out a main event the day of the fight, UFC president Dana White had stated Nunes would not be headlining events anymore.
