Adesanya-Vettori 2 set for UFC 263
A second championship bout has been added to UFC 263. And like the first, they are both rematches.
Israel Adesanya will return to 185 lbs. to defend his UFC middleweight title against Marvin Vettori. The two first battled in April 2018. The judge’s decision saw Adesanya walked away on the winning side of a split decision. Vettori would regroup and put together a five-fight win streak. That includes a decision win over Kevin Holland, two weeks ago in the main event UFC on ABC 2. Adesanya would win seven more fights following to capture and twice defending the middleweight title. The champ is returning to his division following a failed attempt to become a simultaneous multiple division champ, losing to Jan Blaowiwcz at UFC 259.
Many thought the next challenger to Israel Adesanya would be number one contender, former champion Robert Whittaker. Whittaker beat Kelvin Gastelum by unanimous decision seven days. And its reported he declined the quick turnaround for UFC 263 on June 12th.
Reminder UFC 263 is already set to see the second flyweight title match between Brandon Moreno & champion Deiveson Figueiredo. Their first meeting at UFC 255 came together on three-weeks’ notice and was a barn burner. After the fight was scored a majority draw it was a no-brainer to set up the rematch.
