MMA is Back in ABQ, Fightworld MMA 19 Saturday
One of New Mexico’s pioneer MMA shows is returning. Fightworld MMA is 19 on August 21st featuring the top amateur talent the “Land of Enchantment” has to offer.
First established by legendary MMA coach Tom Vaughn in 2004. the first Fightworld MMA event featured, now UFC welterweight Tim Means vs. Noah Thomas and featured names like John “The Magician” Dodson & Lafayeffe Barela.
The second event three months later returned Lafayette Barela & “The Dirty Bird” to the cage and now matchmaker, Jon Judy collected a second round TKO. The main event was the first of two meetings between Carlo Prator & Carlos Condit. That night it was Prator winning by triangle choke in the first round. Those first two events both took place at the Sunshine Theater in Albuquerque, NM.
Names like Adam Oakey and UFC vets Damacio Page & Fabio Maldonado have also fought for Fightworld MMA. The last Fightworld event was in October of 2010 and included names like Gerald Lovato, Nathan Torrez, & Turrell Galloway. After nearly a 11-year hiatus the promotion re-emerged with Fightworld MMA 18 in Pennsylvania on July 17th, 2021.
It’s fitting that it will be Tom Vaughn & Jon Judy putting on the first MMA event in Albuquerque since LFA 80 at the Route 66 Casino in January of 2020, as they consistently brought cards fans have loved to the Duke City for 17 years.
Fightworld MMA 19 is taking place at the Fit NHB Martial Arts Complex 1010 Candelaria RD NW. Doors open at 6 p.m. MT & the first bell is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT. The card is expected to showcase 10-12 MMA matches featuring the top amateur talents from throughout the southwest. Click here for tickets.
