Third title in Place for Dec. 11th
Charles Oliveira’s first lightweight title defense will come against Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 269.
In May at UFC 262 Oliveira capped off an improbable turn around to his career capturing the UFC lightweight title. The first round against Michael Chandler was forgettable. The second round was a different story as a left hook would crumble Chandler and a few strikes later “Do Bronx” was champion. The 31-year-old Brazilian is on a nine-fight win streak far removed from a 2-4 stint from 2-15 to 2017 that had many questioning if the potential would be realized.
Poirier a former interim champion is unquestionably one of the biggest names in the sport following a pair of TKO wins over Conor McGregor. In 2020 “The Diamond” came out on top of a five-round war with Dan Hooker that was an instant classic and fight of the year candidate. Poirier then went on to even the score with Conor McGregor seven year after their initial meeting. After the first win over McGregor Poirier had the choice of championship or pay day. The Louisiana native choose the money fight claiming a second win over McGregor.
The much-anticipated lightweight title bout joins a card that already included Julianna Pena challenging Amanda Nunes for the UFC women’s bantamweight title and the flyweight championship trilogy bout between Brandon Moreno & Deiveson Figueirdo.
The card has also announced a pair of high-profile bantamweight additions. Number nine ranked contender Pedro Munhoz will take on former champion number 11 ranked Dominick Cruz. And number 15 ranked Raulian Paiva will clash with internet darling “Sugar” Sean O’Malley.
