Shake up to the top of UFC 294

As advertised, the main event will still see a rematch for the lightweight title but now it’s not the one that was originally announced.

Former lightweight champion. Charles Oliveira has suffered a gruesome cut during training that is forced his withdraw from the October 21 card. The new main event will see a rematch from February’s 284. Back at the begging of the year Islam Makhachev defeated Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski I unanimous decision. Mini, including Volkanovski, felt that the fight was much closer than the square cards reflected, and could’ve even went in his favor.  Since then Volkanovski has not hit his desire for a rematch that he feels as well deserved.

Makhachev hasn’t fought since that meeting in Australia which was his 12th win in a row and first successful title defense. Volkanovski fought five months later at UFC 290 successfully defending his championship against interim title holder Yair Rodriguez. Volkanovski has been linked to rumors suggesting he would be defending his title in January against Ilia Topuria. That fight is still on the table depending on how UFC 294 plays out. Taking a championship fight on 11 days notice Appleway class while a possible defense of your own championship lies in the weight only emphasizes how much Volkanovski really is trying to be not just “The Great” but one of the greatest ever.
